Elizabeth Elsewhere (Sept 2026)

I have another piece out in Asterisk, The Unacknowledgeable Work of Pastors’ Wives. This is a follow up to last year’s piece on church planting and the isomorphism to VC start-up culture.

I was also featured in an episode of The Students, talking about how I got my weird research career. The one thing I wish I’d talked about more was how good being in a normal job for 10 years was for me. It let me build runway and develop into the kind of person who could do these weird things and I heartily recommend the general idea to young people, although the specific path of programmer is not looking so hot anymore.

Frog and Toad and the Increasingly Capable Machines

Do you want to talk to your loved ones about the HuggingFace swarm, but don’t know how? Have you watched your cousin’s face glaze over when you talk about the METR report? Do you wish there was an easier way?

Now there is, with frogandtoad.ai, which tells the story of the HuggingFace attack in the style of Arnold Lobel’s classic children’s stories, where by classic I mean “older than me”.

Thanks to Timothy Telleen-Lawton for funding this work!

AI disclosure: this started as a joke prompt to Claude. I’ve rewritten and expanded a great deal but it still more-or-less follows Claude’s plot. You can see the original prompt and response here.

I soft-launched with art from Gemini while waiting on a human artist. By the time of this post the art has all been replaced at heroic speed and quality by HungerArtist. He uses a pseudonym for his illustration work but if you also have a burning need I have permission to share his Upwork privately.

EDIT 2026-10-04: It didn’t occur to me initially to note that the entire website is vibecoded, because that’s the default now and I’d never set expectations for software projects the way I had for writing, but for the sake of thoroughness I’ll note it.
